scalable, extensible multisite architecture

We partnered with London Marathon Events to completely reimagine their digital estate.

The scalable, accessible platform we created has unified their brand, streamlined their content and laid the groundwork for long-term growth.

Our partnership with London Marathon Events began with a deep discovery process and has grown into an ongoing relationship built on trust and delivery.

We created a future-ready multi-site platform that adapts to different event brands whilst maintaining a consistent experience and improves the digital estate for every audience - from participants and charities to staff and volunteers.

The platform, built in Drupal, is scalable, extensible and underpinned by an efficient content and design system, laying strong foundations for LME’s long-term ambitions.

"With multiple event sites and a growing portfolio acquired each year, coupled with a CMS platform that did not fulfil our needs, we needed a digital partner who could provide clear, actionable recommendations and guide us through the complexities of a platform migration. GAIN has proven to be more than just a supplier – they’ve become an essential part of our digital transformation journey.

Through a thorough strategic and technical discovery phase, they delivered robust recommendations for our information architecture and platform solution. This has enabled us to rapidly move into the design and build phase, ensuring we met our critical migration deadlines.

GAIN’s partnership has been integral to our success, and we look forward to continuing this collaborative journey together as we evolve our digital presence."

  • Our work with London Marathon Events began with a comprehensive discovery phase. We facilitated workshops across the organisation with a wide variety of stakeholders to understand user and business needs. We combined this with extensive user research and a full content and technology audit.

This led to a reimagined information architecture that moved LME away from a fragmented landscape of individual event sites and organisational microsites. In its place, we created a multisite Drupal platform with a central umbrella site for events – ensuring consistency, scalability and far better content management.

    Creating a multisite design system

Working closely with LME’s design team, we developed a refreshed visual identity and transformed it into a powerful design system. Comprising a library of reusable components, templates and layouts, new assets could flex to match individual event branding while ensuring accessibility and consistency.

The technology stack was carefully chosen with LME’s needs in mind. We built the site in a progressively decoupled Drupal framework, offering a modern experience for users and editors alike.

    Embedding new technologies through training

We also supported the selection of a hosting partner capable of handling the scale of LME’s events, including high-traffic peaks during ballots and race days. Our team continues to provide support and out-of-hours cover to ensure everything runs smoothly when it matters most.

We also provided training and worked alongside LME’s content team to help them populate the site and make the most of the new tools available.

Content design support helped maximise the potential of the flexible layout system, resulting in a polished and effective digital presence for each event as well as the wider organisation.

These efforts reduced complexity, improved editorial governance and enabled LME to move forward with a simplified, user-focused content foundation.

    Launching a future-ready, multisite platform

Our strong relationship with London Marathon Events continues to flourish, with future plans already underway to evolve the platform and provide more services and features for charities and spectators.

Together we transformed a collection of disconnected event sites with manual, inefficient content workflows and limited scalability into a harmonised, multisite platform.

We’re excited to keep delivering value for the organisation and the communities it serves.

GAIN’s partnership has been integral to our success, and we look forward to continuing this collaborative journey together as we evolve our digital presence.
